Writing Life

Creative Juices

The Desert Sleuths chapter of Sisters in Crime hosted a conference this past weekend, and it was amazing. There was a panel led by Rhys Bowen with Edith Maxwell, Catriona McPherson, and Lois Winston.

The topic focused on staying creative.

If you’ve read many of my posts, you know I enjoy setting goals. After attending this panel, I’m going to start setting concrete deadlines to accompany my goals.

For instance, if I’m writing a story that does not have a contract yet, I need to remain focused as I write and set deadlines for myself. Also, if I have a contracted story, I should set personal deadlines before the story is due. So, by the time I turn it in to the publisher, it’ll shine.

I was also challenged to set goals for other aspects of my writing life. Marketing, working on my website, newsletters, blog posts, and social media should not be afterthoughts. I need to create with purpose and be consistent.

I would love for you to share your strategies on meeting deadlines and setting goals.

Next time, we’ll dive deeper into keeping our creative juices flowing.

September is the New January

In August, I joined a small group of friends, and we looked at our goals from January. We discussed how we were doing on our 2025 goals. We also talked about new goals for the rest of the year.

We discussed other goals, like family, health, and spiritual goals. One of my goals is to finish writing the rough draft of my work in progress.

Do you set new goals in September? Or do you feel like your original goals are in place and they are good? Or are you just happy to have survived a hot summer?

Goodreads is a good site for finding books and setting goals for reading. https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/15930746.Jackie_Layton

I hope September is a lovely month for you, and I hope you read great books.

What Am I Not Going to Do in June?

I’m not going to get a sunburn. I’m not going to gain weight. I’m not going to cut my bangs.

I’ve had bangs for years, decades actually, and thanks to Covid-19, I haven’t had my hair cut since January. I’ve also wondered if my hair would look better without bangs now that I live at the beach. One of my granddaughters grew out her bangs in 2019, so she’s my inspiration for trying in 2020.

Look at the determination on her face. She’s going to be my inspiration in the days ahead. Both of these girls are full of spunk and integrity. They’re two of my little heroes.

What are your goals for this month?
