White Pelicans

In January, a local weatherman mentioned white pelicans had arrived in our area. Today, we just experienced the joy of spotting two white pelicans at our beach. People stopped and watched, and it was fun!

In the winter white pelicans visit Florida, but they can also be found in southern California and along the Gulf Coast states. In the summer adult white pelicans breed in colonies on lakes in western Canada and the northwest U.S.

The white pelicans feed from the water’s surface, dipping their beaks into the water to catch fish. I actually witnessed one of the pelicans dip his head into the water, lift it up, and swallow a fish. Brown pelicans were diving into the water to get their food, but the white pelican swam and ate.

The white pelicans are huge. I looked it up and they have a nine-foot wingspan! As we left the beach, we ran into a couple debating if it really was a white pelican. The man said they are not supposed to be in the Atlantic Ocean, especially in February. We told him he wasn’t wrong, but somehow, there they were.

It’s interesting how something as simple as white pelicans showing up unexpectedly can bring strangers together.

Monday Funday

I think many people think of Monday as the least popular day of the week. So, let’s have some fun.

Have you heard the legend that Ethiopian shepherds were the first to discover coffee? The story goes the spotted goats dancing in the distance. The shepherds went to explore and discovered the goats had been eating coffee berries.

Today is National Apple Pie Day and National Hummus Day.

I enjoy hummus, but coffee and apple pie make a nice combination.

Texas is the setting for upcoming book, Clover Covered Corpse. Here are a couple of fun Texas facts.

In 1853, Captain Richard King bought some land near a creek and it became The King Ranch. It’s 825,000 acres and bigger than Rhode Island. It even has its own airport.

One thing Texas is known for is its size. Everything is bigger in Texas is probably true. It’s also known for horses, rodeos, barbecue, oil, the Alamo, sports, and so much more.

Tyler, Texas has a rose festival. This year the dates are October 17-20.  There’s a coronation for the Rose Queen, a ribbon cutting and rose presentation, the Queen’s Tea, and if that’s not enough, there’s the Rose Parade. It’s no wonder Tyler is the rose capital of the world.

Fun Vehicles

Growing up my brother and I played Smush Bug and Horsie for entertainment in the car. We also played the license plate game on trips. I may not know much about vehicles, but I pay attention.

One vehicle that has always intrigued me is a VW Bus. It’s not actually a bus, but it’s not called a van. Why? The VW Bus also came in fun colors.

In a story I’m working on now, I’m including a VW Bus as a ‘food truck.’ It’s actually a coffee bar in my story. So I’d already been thinking about this particular vehicle when Tim and I drove by one. Tim’s so good to me, and parked near it so I could take some pictures to pun on my Pinterest board.

I blotted out the license plate, and this thing is in perfect shape. You’d think we were back in 1970.

Seeing this VW made me happy, and I’d like to share pictures of it with you. Have you ever owned a VW bug? Bus? Any VW?
